[edit] His Character
Even when he was a child he was pure, prayerful, and kind. He would stay that way his whole life. As a student, his fellow students looked up to Alfred Pampalon because he was very good, he was their role model. He was popular and athletic.
[edit] His Love of Mary
Alfred Pampalon is known to have been very devoted to Mary. When Alfred's mother was dying, she told her children that they had a loving mother up in heaven. She was talking about Mary. Before he went to a Redemptorists monastery he went in front of a statue of Mary and asked Mary to pray that the monks would let him Join. He went to the monastery and they let him in even though his health was bad because they could tell that he truly wanted to become a Redemptorists father. When he was training to become a Roman Catholic priest his fellow students asked him how he could study philosophy so well and he said that he imagined Mary was asking him the questions. Every day he would make his head touch the floor and pray to Mary. When he was dying he would pray to Mary all day. He had a very deep love for her.
[edit] Later years and death
At the age of 26, he found out that he had tuberculosis. Unlike most people, this terrible event brought him closer to God. The dying Redemptorist priest moved back to his Quebec to be a priest there. Even in pain, he gave communion, baptized people, and heard confessions. Before his death he was in constant pain and could not get comfortable. Alfred Pampalon would spend his days in prayer. The night before the great Redemptorist priest died, he said in a soft voice "O death..., O holy death..., come..., do come! O divine Savior..., my hope is in your merits... I am happy... to suffer for you! I want to go to Heaven... to see you and Mary," after that he got up and sang in a loud voice the Magnificat. The next day he died.
