[edit] Complications with Filmography

The filmography section is a combination of IMDB, Ruscico's filmography, and Alan Upchurch's articles, and is as complete as I can currently make it. Still, there are a number of gray areas.

  • My Friend Kolka, Beat Up Drum, and Fuse #3 are all listed solely on Ruscico's filmography. No original Russian titles are given, and it is unknown if these films are feature length or shorts.
  • The Fox and the Grapes, The Motherland Calls, The Will, The Front, and Our Heart are all listed solely in Alan Upchurch's filmography from Video Watchdog Nov/Dec 91.
  • Ruscico and Upchurch give different dates for Three Encounters: Ruscico says 1948, Upchurch says 1950.
  • A number of titles are translated differently between Ruscico and Upchurch (The Lord of Family Life vs. The Master of Life, for example). In each case I have chosen the translation that seems most accurate, though I may have chosen incorrectly.
  • In two instances the translations have been so different that I've been forced to include both: The Missing Certificate/Lost Literacy, and The Little Daring One/Tiny and Remote. In both cases it is possible that I am conflating two completely different films, though this seems unlikely (due to the listed dates of release and a glance at the original Russian title).
  • Ruscico lists Ptushko as the director of The Missing Certificate, The Little Turnip, and Dog and Cat, but Alan Upchurch provides specific counter-examples (naming other men as directors), so I have deferred to him in these instances.
  • Due to the use of multiple filmography lists, there is considerable variation in terminology: it's very possible that "special effects," "director of combination shots," and "special effects production director" all mean the same thing. There are other terminology variations as well.

As there is such a lack of clarity regarding Ptushko's complete filmography, I would suggest that this discussion section be used to provide specific justification for any alterations. If someone is able to view one of these films, or finds another source of information, please adjust the filmography, then list the adjustment here and cite the source for the change so that everyone knows where to find the most accurate information.
