Alexo, Alberta
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alexo, Alberta was a hamlet in Alberta until 1955.
It was located along the David Thompson Highway, between Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House, at an elevation of 1,200 m. Shunda Creek, a tributary of the North Saskatchewan River, runs nearby.
It was named after the Alexo Coal Company, which operated a mine near the community from the 1920s until 1955. There is still coal underground, but geologists estimate that it would not be commercially feasible to extract it.
Most of the former townsite, now known as Camp Alexo, is currently owned by the Youth and Volunteer Centre of Red Deer, Alberta.
