Alexander Green was a sixteen-year-old boy, who lives in Golders Green in London, who wants to leave his middle-class Jewish home. He was based on the writer's fourteen-years-old Adam. Alexander's parents, Joe and Fay Green, tried to understand him and he had a sister Renata.
