Alexander Volg Zangief is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Fighting Spirit (Japanese Title - はじめの一歩, Hajime no Ippo). His signature move is called "White Fang", it is a quick uppercut immediately followed by a chopping right. The "fang" in its name is meant to describe the almost simultaneous strikes coming from opposite directions, like the jaws of a wolf biting its prey.

[edit] Background

Volg is a young boxer from Russia. His coach, Luthuran Ramuda, had trained Volg for 10 years. Before he came to Japan, he was a former World Amateur Champion, who got into boxing to sustain himself and his mother, who had fallen seriously ill.

After his contract with the Otowa Gym was canceled, Volg returned to Russia. Sometime after, his sick mother eventually passed away. This prompted Volg to return to Japan to retrieve his boxing gloves from Ippo so he could begin fighting again in America. While in Japan he stayed with Ippo and helped out with the family business. He also trained briefly at the Kamogawa Gym to assist Ippo in his fight against Sawamura. He eventually left for America to box on the world stage in the Junior Lightweight division. Coach Kamogawa arranged for his old friend/rival, Dankichi Hama, to be Volg's trainer in the United States.

[edit] Notable fights

  • Volg Zangief vs Ippo Makunouchi
Class A Boxer Tournament Featherweight final match (10 rounder). He lost by KO 1 minute and 21 seconds into the 5th round. Volg pummeled Ippo early in the match, until his stamina began to weaken and he couldn't effectively execute his specialty. It then became a hitting match until Ippo dodged Volg's White Fang and quickly countered with his Gazelle punch KOing Volg.
  • Volg Zangief vs Takeshi Sendo
The Japanese Featherweight Championship match (10 rounder). After Eiji Date had relinquished the title, the #1 and #2 ranked fighters fought for the title. Volg lost by decision. The two were pretty even throughout the match, until Volg slipped while Sendo was throwing a punch. Although the punch did not connect, the ref still counted it as a down. Even with this point deduction, many, including Ippo, believed Volg to be in the lead for points. Even Sendo didn't accept the decision and put a rematch with him as a priority. Volg's trainer, Ramda, demanded to see the score cards, but was refused. Ramda believed that Volg lost the match because he was a foreigner. With two consecutive loses, the Otawa Gym cut their contract with Volg because they felt he was no longer worth the expense of keeping a foreign fighter.
