Alexander Pagenstecher

Friedrich Alexander Hermann Pagenstecher (April 21, 1828- December 31, 1879) was a German ophthalmologist who was born in Wallau. He studied medicine in numerous European cities including Gießen, Heidelberg and Würzburg. In 1856 he founded an ophthalmology hospital in Wiesbaden, and was its director until his death in 1879.

Pagenstecher made several contributions in ophthalmology, most notably creation of a surgical practice known as intracapsular cataract extraction. In 1862 he introduced yellow mercury oxide as an eye ointment. Pagenstecher died on December 31, 1879 after a freak hunting accident. He was replaced by his brother, Hermann Pagenstecher (1844-1932) as director of the eye hospital in Wiesbaden.
