Alex Hershaft

Alex Hershaft, PhD, is the President of FARM (Farm Animal Reform Movement) in Bethesda, Maryland.

He is Holocaust survivor, a vegan, a former federal employee, a peace activist, and a vegetarian and animal rights activist.

He's in the Vegetarian Hall of Fame, an honor bestowed annual at the annual Vegetarian Summerfest of the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS).

FARM, formerly Vegetarian Information Service (VIS), hosts a number of vegetarian outreach programs, most notably the annual Great American Meatout on March 20. In 1990, under Maynard S. Clark, Meatout began to include outreach events in Mexico, and all 50 US states, whereas previously, only Canada and the USA had been involved. Recently, "Meatout" activities have been established internationally, notably in Europe and South America.

Other FARM outreach programs include "Meatless Mondays", Vegetarian Thanksgiving (a.k.a. "Gentle Thanksgiving"), the annual Mother's Day Veal Ban Protests, World Farm Animals' Day on October 2, Gandhi's Birthday, and the School Lunch Vegetarian C.H.O.I.C.E. program.

Dr. Hershaft has a long history of serving on a number of international vegetarian, animal rights, peace, and humane committees and boards, which he continues to do at this time.
