Alex 'Sandy' MacFarlane

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander "Sandy" MacFarlane (born 1878) was a Scottish professional footballer and, later, manager.

A Scotland international inside-right, he played domestically for Airdrie, Newcastle, Dundee, and Chelsea. He managed both Dundee (1919-1925 and 1928) and Charlton (1925-1928 and 1928-1932) on two occasions before fulfilling a two-year contract (1933-1935) with Blackpool.

At Blackpool, he dismantled the Seasiders squad, allowing nine players to leave Bloomfield Road as he brought in fresh faces. One player he signed, Peter Doherty, cost £1,000 but he was sold to Manchester City in 1936 for ten times that amount.

At the end of the 1934/35 season, Blackpool lay in fourth position in the Division Two table, just missing out on a return to the top flight. The foundations for a bright future had been laid down, and the departing MacFarlane could look back on a job well done as the Tangerines were on the verge of greatness.

Blackpool was MacFarlane's last appointment, and he drifted out of football at the age of 57.
