Aleksandr Sergeyevich Sokolov

Aleksandr Sergeyevich Sokolov (Russian: Александр Сергеевич Соколов) is a Russian politician and the current Minister of Culture & Mass Communication for President Vladimir Putin's government. He was nominated to the post by the Prime Minister, Mikhail Fradkov, and has held it since 9 March 2004.

Sokolov was born in August 8, 1949 in Leningrad (now Saint Peterburg). He completed his undergraduate degree at the Moscow Conservatory College as musicologist, and his master's degree at the Moscow Conservatory, Department of Music Theory.

Since 1979 Sokolov is a professor in Moscow Conservatory to teach a course of music analysis. Since 1993 - in Full Professor position. Since 1996 he is a Chair of Department of Music Theory. In 1992-2001 he was a Vice-Rector in Scientific Affairs of Moscow Conservatory. From 2001 to 2004 Sokolov held the position of Rector of the Moscow Conservatory.

Sokolov has Ph.D in Musicology (1982) and Grand Doctor in Art (1992) academic degrees.He is a member of Russian Composers Union, a Distinguished Professor in many Universities of Europe, Japan, and South Korea.

Sokolov has many signs of public and govermental honors, among them the Honored Art Worker of Russian Federation (1999), the Laureate of National Prize of Russia (2005).

He is an author of several musicological books and articles on music composition. Among them his monograph: "Introduction of the 20th Century Music Composition" (Moscow, 2004).
