Alekhine's Defense, Modern

In chess, B04 is the ECO code for the Alekhine's Defense, Modern chess opening. The game begins 1 e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3. The B04 is concerned with all Black's responses except 4...Bg4 which is reserved for B05. ECO devotes the most space to 4...g6 5.c4 Nb6 6.exd6, the Fianchetto Variation and 4...g6 5.Bc4, the Keres Variation. It's a hedgehog type defense where White avoids exchanging pieces and Black creates a compact defense. Lev Alburt has played 4...g6 nearly 60 times as Black with +20=14-25 score. 4...dxe5 is the Larsen Variation. Bent Larsen scored +2=3-3 in international competition, most notably his games with Tal and Fischer. 4...c6 is along the lines of the hedgehog defense creating a difficult to attack position. In most variations, ...Bg4 can be played and can transpose into a B05 opening.
