Aleka's Attic

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aleka's Attic was a rock band formed by River Phoenix and his sister Rain. River was lead singer and played guitar, his sister: vocals and keyboard. Josh McKay was the bass player and vocals, Josh Greenbaum, a friend of River’s from Florida, was the drummer and Tim Hankins played the viola. Tim Hankins was the first member to leave the band, angry that River was always gone months at a time to shoot movies. Josh McKay soon joined him. Later Hankins and McKay formed the band Emperor Moth. Later, the two were replaced by Sasa Raphael and Flea (from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, both playing the bass.

The group has disbanded, due to River Phoenix's death on October 31, 1993 from drugs while recording a movie (Dark Blood) that had not been completed posthumously. He had problems breathing during that time, according to his younger brother Joaquin. At his funeral, he wore a t-shirt of the band while resting in the casket.

River always said that music was his passion, and that he even preferred it over acting. He didn't get paid for it, like he did for his acting, but he loved it just as much, if not more. He put just as much effort into it as he did into his acting.
