[edit] Edit summaries

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thanks for your work on these important bios. I created a redirect page so that the heading for Martín-Baró now shows the correct accents. Hi, it's great to hear from you. I know Segundo Montes' work very well. In fact, I used all their work in my research, as I once worked with Salvadoran refugees in the U.S. Ellacuría's work was very influential for me in thinking about universities. By the way, if you write entries about them in Norwegian, do you know how to cross-list them with English and Spanish? Remarkably, they don't all have Spanish entries yet either. What exactly is your field? And if I may ask, how did you end up in Norway? (If you don't want to post it, you can send me an email.) Also, I imagine you have heard that Jon Cortina is very ill, and may not live long. He is the only one of the Jesuits I actually met. A great man. Bruxism 04:56, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

I see you cross-listed your Ellacuría and Martín-Baró pages with Spanish, Norwegian, and German (at least I think it was you), but except for the Spanish, most of those articles don't exist yet in the other languages. I see there have been a lot of updates to the Ellacuría page. I hope you have seen them. Someone started the UCA page, but I rewrote it and tried to put in what was more important. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Thanks for uploading Image:Martin baro1.JPG. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Thank you very much for taking up the work. I feel it is very important to document the work of these people. I just started the article for Jon Cortina. He was a professor of mine at UCA, and although I found related articles in Spanish and Catalan, it didn't exist in English. An image you uploaded, Image:Escudo esj.gif, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as {{seal}}. Thanks for uploading Image:Ellacuria018.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use.
