Alberto Santofimio Botero is a Colombian politician who is a member of the Colombian Liberal Party. At one point, he was the Minister of Justice, a two-time presidential candidate and a senator. He was considered to be on close terms with famed drug lord, Pablo Escobar.[citation needed]

In the 1990s, Santofimio was arrested and found guity of receiving money from drug trafficking in order to support his bid for the presidency. After serving a prison sentence, he again received his liberty.[citation needed]

During the investgations around the murder of Luis Carlos Galán, the name of Santofimio was mentioned various times in reference to the whereabouts and the planning of the crime.[citation needed]

On May 12, 2005, Santofimio was captured by the police for participating in the 1989 murder of ex-presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galán.[citation needed]

John Jairo Velásquez, a.k.a. Popeye, one of Pablo Escobar´s more trusted "henchmen" and head of the assassins of the Medellín Cartel, alleged that Santofimio was partly responsible for the planning of Galan´s assassination[citation needed]. Velásquez also accused Santofimio of having participated in the attempted assisinations of César Gaviria[citation needed] and Andrés Pastrana Arango[citation needed], and in the planning of the murder of Rodrigo Lara Bonilla (Minister of Justice in 1984)[citation needed].

Santofimio is currently awaiting a verdict after being tried for his alleged participation in the assassination of Galan[citation needed].
