[edit] NPOV?
This page's current content is extremely inappropriately written, and filled with non-NPOV content. Lyric snippet's don't belong on a page about Morissette, they belong on individual album pages. Additionally, the writer pre-supposes to know which lyrics correspond with which part of Morissette's life, something which would really need to be backed up with references to Morissette sayingso herself. In all it's just extremely not-encyclopedic. That being said, I'm on my way out the door, so if it hasn't been fixed by the time I get back, I'll do it myself. 66.157.29.22 05:43, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)
- FWIW, I agree with your remark on the non-NPOV content 213.51.209.230 17:58, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)
==NEW PICS? Is the picture of alanis live in London OK? Can anyone put Alanis live in Kings collage London under it, i cant figure it out!!-TKELLY02
[edit] Alanis album was Top 10 in Canada or US?
- Credited simply as Alanis, Morissette's first album, "Alanis", was issued in 1991, and her first single, "Too Hot", reached the Top 10.
Where? Canada, or the US? --Robert Merkel
-
- I think in Canada, but I don't want to change the entry without being sure. :-) -- Zoe
I'm sure it was in Canada, for the album wasn't released anywhere else. --MTS
I'm also certain it's Canada --Zippanova 18:56, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I'm dead sure it's Canada, it wasn't released anyplace else. --koll2786
[edit] Image layout
For someone who knows about these things, the image Alanis4.jpg overlaps and obscures some text when viewed with Mozilla 1.5 Thanks! 207.189.98.44 19:56, 30 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- And Alanis2.jpg also. The stated width of the floats (in the style= markup) didn't match the actual width of the images. I've fixed this, and cropped Alanis2.jpg so it doesn't take up so much space. Zack 20:17, 30 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- Addendum: I also switched both images -2 and -4 to float:right. It isn't quite as artistic this way, but the section headings "Jagged Little Pill" and "So-Called Chaos" no longer look like image captions, which I think is more important. Zack
[edit] Buying So-Called Chaos?
Chocolateboy, I notice you've been making a lot of changes to this page too. Glad I'm not the only one! Planning to buy her new album, So-Called Chaos? Stoic Squirmer
- Hi, Stoic Squirmer. Nice contributions you've made to that page! I may buy the new album. Haven't heard anything from it yet. chocolateboy 10:43, 18 Jan 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Madonna
3rd Aug 2004
I love Alanis and loathe Madonna, and yet I think this article understates Madonna's influence on the success of Alanis through her company, not influence musically, but in terms of giving her a chance to be a success. Without Madonna I doubt we would have even heard of Alanis. I have made additions to this article that have intimated the significance of Madonna but over time they seem to have been removed or diluted.
[edit] Dave Coulier?
What is the source for the Dave Coulier claim? In these parts it's not Dave Coulier but former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Felix Potvin. This is more believable for a few reasons -- Potvin had a reputation for being a jackass, and he's closer to home (and I've heard more sources say it was Potvin). Anyway -- I can't provide a source for it for now so I say -- unless the Coulier connection can be independently confirmed, it should be struck. Rhombus 21:58 31 March 2007
- I'm striking it. Most places I've looked say it's unknown who the guy was. If it was known, why would it be such a big deal? Source, please, one who adds such info. --AmyBeth 07:56, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
No, don't strike it -- Alanis admitted it was about Coulier in her interview with Howard Stern. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.57.122.221 (talk • contribs) .
- The only sources I can find regarding it are accounts from people who supposedly listened to that edition of the show. --Jtalledo (talk)
- Perhaps it should be changed to "Allegedly" instead, until a transcript or recording of that interview can be found... Shuckiduck 07:52, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Gay icons category
Anyone have a reference confirming the article's inclusion the gay icon category? --Jtalledo (talk) 20:48, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
-
- She's got a lesbian following.
[edit] Harmonica type
Does anyone know what type of harmonica Morissette uses in her songs? 14-hole diatonic, 12-hole chromatic, 16-hole chromatic, or something else like the tremolo? —Lowellian (talk) 05:15, July 20, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Star Search question
The article says: "In New York City, Morissette landed a spot on Star Search, a popular televised American talent competition"
Can this be updated to say how she did in the competition (good or bad). --rob 12:53, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Alanis morissette live in munich april 2005 2 crop.jpg
I'm removing the image because it seems strange having two images from the same concert in the same position on the article. Extraordinary Machine 21:20, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Gay icon category 2
I reverted the addition to Category:Gay icons again. I'm opposed to having such a category for the same reason I'm opposed to having Category:Sex symbols - they're subjective categories that run contrary to NPOV. Changing the lyrics to "Ironic" doesn't make her a gay icon. It might make her a gay rights advocate and I wouldn't be opposed to that category being used if it exists. --Jtalledo (talk) 01:16, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
One thing that makes her a gay icon: She kissed another woman in an appearance on Sex and the City. Her character participated in a bisexual game of Spin the Bottle. 24.143.153.208 01:29, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- That has virtually nothing to do with the question of what makes a person a gay icon. And besides, this discussion is almost a year old; the category was deleted months ago. Bearcat 02:14, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Alanis Morissette in Relationships
Hello,
Alanis Morissette in Relationships is meant to give the visitor a wide angle view of how Alanis Morissette handles her relationships in essence and in practice. It also allows the visitors to examine the characteristics of their own relationships with Alanis Morissette.
Both content and test are based on sound astrological knowledge and research and they gained popularity among web surfers.
I believe that even though Astrology is not considered a mainstream science, these knowledge and compatibility tool should be made available to whoever wishes to study Alanis Morissette as broadly as possible.
I have no desire to be considered a spammer and I don't want to force Top Synergy on the authors of Alanis Morissette's article.
I ask you, authors of Alanis Morissette that if you have an objection to placing a link to Alanis Morissette in Relationships in the External Links section, please note it here. Else, I’ll place the link hoping that it would be a valid resource for Alanis Morissette's fans and researchers.
With appreciation, Midas touch 05:01, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Alternative to what?
I'm not so sure she should be considered an alternative rock artist. She's really just a pop artist who jumped on the "everything pop is alternative now" bandwagon that made alternative look like a meaningless phrase. -- LGagnon 15:07, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Jumped? I'm not entirely certain she has claimed to be any kind of artist - genres were probably assigned by record labels and music journalists. --Jtalledo (talk) 21:15, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
I dont know how you can say that Alanis Morissette is anything but Alternative Rock. She isn't 'pop' at all though. --LocalBandAid02 15:07, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- Try listening to her Alanis-era music. Very much dance-pop.--Enigmatick 21:58, 2 October 2006 (UT
The alanis page should focus on Alanis carrer from Jagged little pill onwards!! TKelly02
[edit] US Hot 100 data entirely wrong.
According to my Billboard book of top 40 hits by Joel Whitburn, the chart data is entirely misquoted. I already deleted some of the entries before realizing it was too big of a mess to cleanup in the 5 minutes I have before bedtime.
[edit] Ironic
I've read that Morissette knew none of the situations she sang about in "ironic" were ironic, and that's what's ironic about the song. 72.57.44.16 23:13, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Waterandsewerbill
- Actually, Morissette addresses that issue directly on her iTunes originals album. She relates an anecdote involving someone asking her if the real irony of the song is that there are no ironies in it, which she then admits is the real irony of the song, attributing the oversight to her flakiness. --Jtalledo (talk) 03:01, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Discography section
Well, 203.26.122.12 (talk • contribs) has chosen to revert me again, so here goes. I'd already split much of the discography info to Alanis Morissette discography because the article was getting long. I removed the excess number of fair use images (ones that are not under a free license) that were in a gallery because Wikipedia:Fair use criteria states, "The amount of copyrighted work used should be as little as possible ... Do not use multiple images or media clips if one will serve the purpose adequately.", and "The material must contribute significantly to the article (e.g. identify the subject of an article, or specifically illustrate relevant points or sections within the text) and must not serve a purely decorative purpose." It doesn't matter if other articles use the same format - the point is that they shouldn't. Also, the images had no fair use rationale on their description pages. Finally, excluding chart positions in Canada for Morissette's albums, when she is a Canadian musician, is extremely odd. Extraordinary Machine 17:09, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Removed Trolling
I have removed all the trolling messages from this discussion. Acalamari 18:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Category Clutter
Alanis Morissette currently has the distinction of having the second most number of categories of any article in Wikipedia following George H. W. Bush. The categories at the bottom of the page are a block of difficult-to-read links that are difficult to read or use.
One option I see is the consolidate the "Canadian X" and "American X" categories, such as Category:Canadian rock singers and Category:American rock singers. Since Morissette is now American by nationality and since the categories are for grouping people by nationality, I would suggest that all of her categories be switched to their American conterparts. Do other people object to this? If not, I will do so in a few days. Dr. Submillimeter 11:12, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- Do you mean to swtich them all from things like "Canadian Buddhists" and "American Buddists" to "Canadian-American Buddists?" If you were going to do that, do it. Acalamari 19:46, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- I was thinking of switching things like "Canadian Buddhist" to "American Buddhist". Would that be OK, or would it cause problems? Dr. Submillimeter 12:48, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
- Since she is Canadian by birth, but lives over here in the United States, I was thinking that "Canadian-American" would be more appropriate. Acalamari 22:33, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
- Categories like "Canadian-American Buddhist" do not exist in Wikipedia. If they did, they would be deleted. Anyhow, Alanis has now beaten George H. W. Bush as the top article for category clutter. The categories really need to be compressed. I will do this on 12 Jan 2006 unless I receive strong objections. Dr. Submillimeter 11:10, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
- but does the article belong in all the catagories? Their is the problem that she is yet another Canadian who is famous in the states (YACWFITS) and so she appers in many catagories that are american as well as the simalar Canadian Catagory, but they are both valid catagories for the article to appear.
- Lets put it this way, lets say it were to turn out that she got a patent on a new invention - it would be logical to ADD the catagory(s) Canadian/american Inventors would it not? SO if it is logical that the article belongs in teh other catagories, they should stay unless the catagories themselves are not valid IMHO cmacd 13:40, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

OK, I do not have consensus for these actions, so I will not touch the categories. However, the categories for this article are an inpenetrable mass of links in my web browsers. The categories need clean-up if they are going to be useful for navigation. Dr. Submillimeter 10:03, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- I wonder if there is a way to deal with this at the catagory level itself? This is what a programer would call an edge case, as the subject of the article happens to fit many catagories cmacd 13:59, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- It makes more sense to put "Canadian-American." I have seen categories like "English-American," so I see no reason not to put "Canadian-American." Acalamari 17:49, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
What is wrong with having so many?? Doesnt being on the top of the list attract more readers?? - TKELLY02
[edit] Categories
Whilst I do note the above discussion, the number of categories is ridiculous, particularly when many of them are duplicates. I have removed a bunch of categories, leaving 26. Ones removed are:
Duplicates:
- Canadian rock musicians - Canadian rock singers is a subset of this, should not be in both
- Canadian songwriters - Canadian singer-songwriters is a subset of this, no need to be in both
- American songwriters - is in American singer-songwriters
- CJOH - is in CJOH people, a subset of this
Unnecessary/wrong
- Degrassi / CYE / Nip/Tuck / You Can't Do That On Television Actors - appearing on a show once / occasionally
- Crossover (music) / Rhythmic Top 40 acts - too vague
- Hungarian-Americans - nope
No such category
- Canadian immigrants to America
Personally, I am also tempted to remove the 'Canadian singer' / 'Canadian diarist' sort of categories as she's now an American citizen (thus revoking her Canadian citizenship), but retain "Hungarian Canadian", "Franco-Ottawan" etc as they refer to her heritage. I will leave that one to you guys. Categories are a useful tool in Wikipedia, but 49 (more than George Bush!) is crazy. Proto::► 10:37, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

- Taking out citizenship in a forengn country does NOT revoke Canadian Citizenship. Any oaths of revokation that are part of a forign citizenship process are NOT racognized by Canada. The only way to revoke canadian citizenship is to go though a formal process - Like Conrad Black. Since She has AFAIK not done. I understand that it bothers some americans to no end that folks can have Canadian dual citizenship.
- As far as "you can't do that on televison", this was her first major TV Break, and the show is at least partly famous from her presence. I will put that one back.cmacd 14:29, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] A note on GA status
I see that this article was at one time a Featured article or FA candidate. However, the article is not listed as a Good Article . As part of the Rock music WikiProject, it is suggested that an article achieve Good Article (GA) status before having it's candidacy re-newed. So be sure that points from any previous Features article candidate (FAC) archives and peer reviews are taken and applied to the article, and shoot for a GA nomination. Good luck! --Reaper X 22:33, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Commendable Attitude
While hosting the Juno Awards in April 2004, Morissette "exposed" herself on Canadian television by appearing on stage in a robe that simulated a naked body, and stating that Canadians "live in a land where we still think the human body is beautiful and we're not afraid of the female breahttp://en.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/button_bold.pngst." Alanis' attitude toward the human race is one to commend. The rocker says she has so many homosexual pals that she wanted to pay tribute to them, and therefore she changed the line in hit song "Ironic" from "Meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife" to "Meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful husband". She is quoted as saying on website Contactmusic.com: "I have so many friends who are homosexual who I just adore. Anytime I can support the gay community in whatever way, I will." Morissette also shared a kiss with Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City.
She declared in regard to her music that the purpose is to make people react to it, to feel touched by it, to love or hate it, as she sees that as one of the goals of her art. The singer is well known for her quote "I want to walk through life instead of being dragged through it."

[edit] Engagement breakup
I moved all this material together and revised it slightly. I'm not sure that the earlier reports from 2006 should be there at all, as there is no evidence that they had any substance. Gossip magazines are not reliable sources and we are not in the business of giving them credence or spreading their rumours. Still, since they did actually break up recently, I haven't entirely deleted it. Metamagician3000 01:36, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] The Exonerated
We report that as of April 2006 she was to reprise her role in this in May 2006. Did it actually happen? What is there at the moment seems rather odd with no follow up. Metamagician3000 01:38, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
