Al gran sole carico d'amore (In the Bright Sunshine Heavy with Love) is an opera by Luigi Nono based mainly on plays by Brecht. The Italian libretto was written by Nono and Yury Lyubimov. It premiered at the Teatro alla Scala on April 4, 1975. The original production was directed by Lyubimov. The story is unconventional, being set in three periods of revolution: the Paris Commune, the Russian Revolution, and the Cuban Revolution. The three characters are women from those three periods, who perish in an attempt to stop the violence of their times. Before the premiere, critics were expecting a scandal along the lines of Intolleranza. However, the work opened to glowing reviews, and was universally acclaimed.
