Al Molde

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al Molde was the head football coach at Western Michigan University from 1987 through 1996, leaving WMU as the winningest coach in school history (62-47-2) and leading the Broncos to their only outright Mid-American Conference championship in 1988. When his contract expired following the 1996 season, then-WMU President Diether Haenicke opted not to provide Molde an extension which ignited a controversy among those who felt he deserved an extension based on the success he brought to a recently downtrodden program.[citation needed] The 1996 campaign, in which WMU finished 2-9, was only his third losing season overall and came with a lineup full of young players (many of whom would be a huge part of WMU's MAC West Division championship teams in 1999 and 2000, coached by Molde's successor Gary Darnell).

Other coaching stops included head coaching positions at Eastern Illinois University (1983-86, where he tutored current New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton), Central Missouri State University (1979-1982), University of Minnesota, Morris (1970-78) and Sioux Falls College.

Currently, he is the athletic director at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN where he has been since he left WMU. Under his guidance, the Golden Gusties have finished in the top 20 in the Division III NACDA Director's Cup standings several times.
