Al Jazeera Children's Channel is an all-Arabic language television channel marketed at children. The channel is also known as JCC; an acronym leaving out the Arabic definite article al. As an edutainment channel, it seeks to promote childhood and adolescence development by encouraging learning and educating children in a fun way.
Launched on September 9, 2005 by the international television network Al Jazeera, the channel is targeted to children between the ages of three and fifteen. It is available in much of the Middle East and parts of Europe. It broadcasts 18.5 hours a day on weekdays and 19 hours on weekends, and advertises that it produces about 40% of its own programs, the highest proportion of any children's channel. To supplement its in-house produced content, JCC purchases programs internationally.[1] JCC also offers interactive content for children at it's official website.
The channel's headquarters are in the Education City on the outskirts of Doha, Qatar, and it has regional offices in Amman, Beirut, Cairo, Paris and Rabat. It has a staff of over 230 employees. The second wife of the Emir of Qatar, Shaikha Mozah Bint Nasser al-Missned, was instrumental in the creation of the channel. Her brainchild the Qatar Foundation funds the Al Jazeera Children's Channel.[2]
