Al-Mustansir (1176 - 1242) (Arabic: المستنصر بالله) was the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad from 1226 to 1242. He was the son of az-Zahir and the grandson of an-Nasir. There is little said of him beyond that he was mild and virtuous. Like his father, he remained a symbolic Caliph with little political influence. His lasting contribution was the founding of the Al-Mustansiriyya Madrasa on the banks of the Tigris in 1233, now part of the University of Baghdad.
