Akhmat Abdulkhamidovich Kadyrov (Russian: Ахмат Абдулхамидович Кадыров (August 23, 1951 – May 9, 2004) was the president of the Chechen Republic (elected on October 5, 2003). He was assassinated in Grozny stadium by a bomb blast under a VIP stage during a World War II memorial victory parade.

Born in Karaganda, in the Kazakh SSR, his family returned to the Tsentoroy village, Shali district in the Chechen-Ingush ASSR in April 1957.

Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, he became a militia commander and religious leader in the breakaway Chechnya (most notably declaring the Jihad against Russia in 1995 [1], and saying "every Chechen should kill 150 Russians"[2]).

In 1999 Kadyrov defected from the separatist cause and became a staunchly pro-Moscow and controversial leader, eventually becoming president of the Republic. His chief personal bodyguard was Movladi Baisarov.

There were at least a dozen assassination attempts against him. (Most known are on January 29, 2001 - September 7, 2001 - May 20, 2003.)

Death of Kadyrov

On May 9, 2004, an explosion ripped through VIP seating at a "Dinamo" soccer stadium during a mid-morning Soviet Victory Day parade in the capital Grozny, killing Kadyrov, two of his bodyguards, the Chairman of the Chechen State Council, a Reuters journalist, and as many as a dozen others. Some 56 others were wounded, including Colonel General Valery Baranov, the commander of Russian forces in Chechnya. The bomb had been built into the concrete of a supporting column during recent repairs.

Akhmad Kadyrov had 4 children and 13 grandchildren. Two of his elder sons died soon after his death. In 2005, his surviving son Ramzan Kadyrov was appointed the Prime Minister of the Chechen Republic, and later became president in March 2007.

1969-1971 - worked in "Novogroznenski" sovkhoz, Gudermeskiy rayon.

1980 - entered Bukhara Miri-Arab Madrasah.
1982-1986 - continued studying in the Tashkent High Islam University.
1986-1988 - worked as deputy imam of the Gudermes cathedral masjid.
1989-1990 - founded a first in North Caucasia Islamic Institute in the Kurchaloy village and was its rector.
1990 - entered sheriat faculty of Amman Islamic University.
1991 - returned to the motherland, breaking studying.
1993 - designated as deputy mufti, in September 1994 as acting mufti of the Chechen Republic.
1995 - elected mufti of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, declared Jihad against Russia.
1999 - heading commission for constitutional Sharia reform.
2000 - designated as head of the Chechen Republic government.
2001 - awarded Order of Friendship.
October 5, 2003 - elected as president of Chechen Republic.
May 9, 2004 - assassinated.
May 10, 2004 - bestowed the title Hero of the Russian Federation.
