Akago (赤子, あか ご, literally "imperial child"), also referred to as Akanbo ("baby boy"), is a character in the anime and manga series InuYasha. NOTE: The status of Akago as this character's actual name is contested, since akago is standard modern Japanese for baby (whereas all the other characters' names have obscure and / or archaic meanings). In the official English translation, he is simply referred to as "the infant".
[edit] Akago's powers and the birth of Hakudōshi
He is unusual in that he can also speak and read a person's mind. He has the power to latch on to the darkness in a person's heart and twist them to his will. He can also create a barrier with which he can manipulate attacks of yōki (yōkai energy) sent at him, and then use it to attack his opponents. He was split in half by a priest who managed to attack him as he lay dying (revealing a brief image of the boundary to the afterlife). The split worked to his advantage, creating Hakudōshi from Kagura's half and he surviving as Kanna's half. He was placed under the care of a daimyō's wife (who was led to believe he was hers). Later, Abi-Hime's birds attack and Kohaku kills the daimyō's wife as Kan'na took Akago into hiding again.
Though the series ended, for now, the manga continued to reveal Akago was placed inside the body of Mōryōmaru, which adapted many of his personality traits and served as his both his sword and shield. But Naraku managed to absorbed Akago from the inside Moryomaru, taking back his heart.

[edit] Trivia
- Despite the fact that Akago has ears, Hakudōshi does not have visible ears.
- In several versions of the show, including the original Japanese, Akago is given the same voice actor as Hakudōshi, presumably to reflect that they are twins.
- The cloth that Akago was in when he left Mt. Hakurei closely resembles Naraku's baboon pelt.
