Aitcho Islands

The Aitcho Islands are a group of small Sub-antarctic islands, lying in the north entrance to English Strait (between Robert and Greenwich islands, north of Dee Island, in the South Shetland Islands. Life on the islands includes lichens, mosses, and nesting penguins.

Charted and named in 1935 by DI after the Admiralty Hydrographic Office ("Aitcho" is the written pronunciation of "H.O.", Hydrographic Office). Other features in this vicinity were named after members of the Hydrographic Office staff.

Most part of the names of each island were given by Chilean Antarctic expeditions between 1949 and 1951. Making part of the group are:

  • Barrientos Island
  • Emeline Island
  • Jorge Island
  • Cecilia Island, named Isla Torre by Chile
  • Sierra Island
  • Passage Rock
  • Morris Rock
