Airworthiness Directive

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Airworthiness Directive (commonly abbreviated to AD) is a notification to aircraft owner/operators of a known safety issue with a particular model of aircraft, engine, avionics or other system. Most commonly they come about by the submission of FAA Form 8010-4 which is the Malfunction or Defect Report. This form is not mandatory.

More information can be found in Federal Aviation Regulations Part 39 which covers the topic of Airworthiness Directives.

ADs in the USA are issued by the FAA and may be categorised as voluntary, mandatory or emergency.

  • Mandatory AD - Operators must comply within the timeframe included in the directive
  • Emergency AD - Operators must comply immediately.
