Aira District, Kagoshima

Aira (姶良郡; -gun) is a district located in Kagoshima, Japan.
As of the Kirishima merger but with 2003 population data, the district has an estimated population of 86,924 and a density of 231 persons per km². The total area is 375.64 km².

- April 1, 1950- The village of Higashishuzan broke off from the village of Kirishima.
- February 11, 1953 - The village of Yoshimatsu gained town status.
- May 3, 1953 - The village of Hiatari gained town status.
- April 1, 1954
The municipalities of Kokubu, Higashishuzan, and parts of Shimizu merged to form the town of Kokubu.
- The municipalities of Hayato, Hiatariyama, and parts of Shimizu merged to form the town of Hayatohiatari.
- May 10, 1954 - The municipalities of Kokubu, Higashikokubu, and Shikine merged to form the town of Kokubu.
- January 1, 1955
- The municipalities of Hosa, Shigetomi, and parts of Yamada merged to form the town of Aira.
- The remaining parts of the village of Yamada was merged into the town of Gamou.
- February 1, 1955 - The town of Kokubu gained city status.
- April 1, 1957 - The town of Hayatohiatariyama changed their name to Hayato.
- November 3, 1958 - The village of Kirishima gained town status.
- April 1, 1959 - The village of Mizobe gained town status.
- March 22, 2005- The towns of Kurino and Yoshimatsu merged forming the town of Yusui.
- November 7, 2005 - The city of Kirishima was formed from the merger of the city of Kokubu with the towns of Fukuyama, Hayato, Kirishima, Makizono, Mizobe, and Yokogawa.
