[edit] History

The airline was established in 1978 and started operations in 1979. It was formed as US Airways and later known as Interstate Airlines. The current name was adopted in 1988. On 1 October 1994 ICX International Cargo Express was merged into Air Transport International, which was itself acquired by the Brink's Company in February 1998. ATI has been sold in 2006 to Cargo Holdings International CHI, future uncertain. Cargo Aircraft Management was the lead customer for Boeing’s 767 freighter conversion program; however, CHI failed to secure long-term debt restructuring in January 2007 and has placed their order on indefinite hold pending corporate and financial restructuring, rumored to initiate in July 2007. In the 12 months since ATI's sale by Brinks to CHI, airline profits have fallen significantly and the company is not expected to make profit for Q1FY07. Efforts to stem losses have caused the beleaguered air carrier to significantly cut staffing levels throughout the company and hold off the accomplishment of mandatory scheduled preventative maintenance cycles for several aircraft.
