Ahmad Aziz Rafiq

Ahmad Aziz Rafiq (born in 1978) is an Australian citizen that was detained without charge for a year in Iraq.
Ahmad came to Australia as a refugee. He has lived in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. In February 2004 Ahmad travelled to northern Iraq to marry his cousin. Two weeks after his wedding, Ahmad went out to do some shopping and then disappeared.
According to Alexander Downer, Australian Foreign Minister, Ahmad was arrested by Kurdish authorities and later handed to the US Army. Ahmad was initially held in the infamous Abu Ghraib prison and later transferred to Camp Bucca. [1] Ahmad was held without charge until October 2005. In October, after one year and nine months in detention, he was released. [2]
