After Burner Climax is the sequel to the popular arcade and console After Burner games.

It was developed for the Sega Lindbergh arcade system board, and has recently been released to arcades.

Unlike previous versions of After Burner, After Burner Climax introduces two new aircraft, the F/A-18E Super Hornet and F-15E Strike Eagle, while the F-14 Tomcat is now the F-14D Super Tomcat. All aircraft are selectable at the start screen.

Like previous incarnations of After Burner, the "Deluxe" After Burner Climax cabinet has a servo-equipped chair; a new function is a button that locks the chair into a static upright position. Two other cabinet versions include a "Commander" version, which only tilts side to side, and the "Standard" version, which doesn't move at all. The "Deluxe" and "Commander" version cabinets also have widescreen LCD monitors, while the "Standard" has a 29" CRT.

The game was licensed from and was developed with assistance from Boeing and Northrop Grumman.

[edit] Options

While choosing their plane, the player can use the throttle to choose between four different paintjobs for each of the three planes. These paint jobs consist of a "Standard" scheme, "Camouflage" scheme, "Special" scheme, and "Low Visibility" scheme.

After choosing their plane, the player can also choose to listen to After Burner Climax's music or the original soundtrack from After Burner II by holding the throttle back and hitting the missile button.

[edit] Secrets

There are four hidden stages that can only be accessed if the player meets certain conditions as they progress through the game.

Two are located after both refuelling sessions, and can be accessed if the player accumulates enough stars (earned for completing stages without getting shot down). The other two comprise Stages 14 and 15, and can be accessed by destroying a specific target in Stage 13.

Completing Stage 14 or 15 is the only way to get an ending other than "Ending C."

[edit] Trivia

  • The "Standard" paintjob for the F-15E Strike Eagle is reminiscent of Galm 1 "Cipher's" paintjob from Namco's Ace Combat Zero.
  • When you change the soundtrack to After Burner II, it also changes the lock-on sound from the standard chime to the "FIRE!" voice effect found in the original games.
  • Your squadron is affiliated with G.H.O.S.T. (Global Humanitarian Operations & Special Tactics), a fictional NATO-like organization also seen in G.H.O.S.T. Squad, a Sega light gun game.
