Afrin, Syria

Afrin (Kurdish: Efrîn, Arabic: عفرين ʿAfrīn) is a district and city of the Aleppo Governorate, Syria. The district consists of the city of the same name with 80,000 inhabitants, as well as 366 surrounding villages.
The region Afrin is also known as Kurd-Dagh, (Kurdish: Çiyayê Kurd yan Kurmanc, Mountain of the Kurds and/or Kurd-Mountain, Kurd mountains). The district has an area of 3,850 sq. kilometers and consists of 7 municipalities (Afrin (center), Jindêrês, Sharan, Mahbata/Mahbatli, Rajo, Bulbul, Shiyê) with 366 villages, like Qatma, Kastall, Qîbar, Rajo and Midan Akbes. The name Afrîn in Kurdish literally means fruitful creation.
The first resistance against French troops was based on DECO and Shikakies tribes in northern Afrin. The city was later built by France as a commercial center.
