Aerial Tramway Cologne

The Aerial Tramway Cologne is the only river crossing aerial tramway of Germany. It connects the two banks of the Rhine at height of the Cologne zoo bridge. Since 1957 to 2004 it has approx.. 13,7 million humans without an accident transport, however in the year of 2004 288,500 passengers. It is therefore considered as of Cologne the safest means of transport. 2004 for the first time black numbers could be announced by intensified advertisement and night travels for specific occasions. Operator of the Rhine express course is the Cologne aerial ropeway company ltd., since 1998 a daughter of the Cologne transporting enterprises (KVB).

The Rhine express course was taken on 26 April 1957 for the opening of the Bundesgartenschau in enterprise and connected the exhibition sites, the Rhine park, with the linksrheinischen bank in the proximity of Cologne zoo and Flora (Cologne). It was of Europe only aerial ropeway over a river. To the first passengers Federal President Theodor Heuss and the Federal Chancellor and former Cologne mayor Konrad Adenauer belonged 1963 were adjusted and dismantled the Rhine express course, because the rechtsrheinische support of the new zoo bridge stood in the way. After long discussions, whether drivers were irritated by the aerial ropeway over the bridge it was again developed, it with changed route. The linksrheinische suspension tower was easily turned, the rechtsrheinische support was shifted after the south and the distance by a new smaller support to a deep station lying in the Rhine park was extended. The aerial ropeway crosses today late thermal bath built in the Rhine park "Claudius hot spring". The new extended Rhine express course was opened on 22 August 1966.
