Adoni is a commercial town and a municipality in Kurnool district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is 140 miles (225 km) from Hyderabad and 307 miles (494 km) from Madras by rail. It has a population of about 164,000 (2005). Once a stronghold of the medieval Vijayanagar kingdom, today it has a substantial textile industry. The hill-fort above, now in ruins, was an important seat of government in Islamic times and is frequently mentioned in the wars of the 18th century.

Adoni was under the rule of yadavas for in 16th century. At that time Adoni was known as Yadavagiri. Yadavagiri changed into Adavani under the Islamic rule. Later Adavani changed into the now called Adoni. Under British rule Adoni was in Bellary district of Madras presidency. It is known as the grain market of the south.

There are lots of educational institutions in adoni. Adoni Arts and science college, Jyothirmayi college, Viswanarayana college. Students from near by villages come here for college studies. When it comes to schools. There are well registered schools in the town like Y.M.K High school, T.G.L.V High school, Milton High school, Municipal High school and Girls High school.And some govt schools like M.C.B ( Mitai chenna basappa) Head mistress Smt A. Parvathamma and Halamma gangamma high school. Adoni is well known for B.Ed., colleges as well. There are plans to bring Engineering college in adoni.

As of 2001 India census^GRIndia, Adoni had a population of 155,969. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Adoni has an average literacy rate of 52%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with 59% of the males and 41% of females literate. 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
