Adlersky City District

Adlersky City District (Russian: А́длерский райо́н) is the southernmost of four city districts of the city of Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia. It is situated along the Black Sea coast near the southern Russian border with Georgia. Population: 69,120 (2002 Census); 68,827 (1989 Census).
Adler, formerly a town, is now a resort area on the Black Sea coast, a microdistrict and historical center of Adlersky City District. It is a major railway station of the North Caucasus railway and the terminus since Georgian-Abkhazian conflict broke the railway. Adler stays in the mouth of the Mzymta River.

The settlement was found by Russians in 1837 as the fortress of Svyatoy Dukh.
However, this area was inhabited long before the Russian arrival. Since the ancient times a Sadz Abkhazian village, named Liesh, was placed there. In the 12th century, Genoese found a factory, known as Layso in the area. That time this lands belonged to Sadz princes Aredba, who had a good station there. Turks call this place Artlar or Artı. Russians mispronounced it as Adler. However, another theory postulate, that the name comes from brig Adler.

There are Adlersky District History Museum and The South Cultures park there.
Adler is one of the most popular Russian resorts. It has pebbly and narrow beach, backed by railway in some places.
The second Russian president Vladimir Putin has a dacha in Adlersky City District, called Bocharov Ruchey (Бочаров Ручей). The district has a delphinarium, which makes it popular among tourists. It is also home to Adler-Sochi International Airport. A ski resort Krasnaya Polyana is also a part of the district. Being one of Vladimir Putin's favourite places, Krasnaya Polyana has recently become very popular. If Sochi wins a right to hold Winter Olympics in 2014, the main part of the money will be invested in Krasnaya Polyana and Adlersky City District.
