Though springing from the race riots of 1983 in Sri Lanka, "Acts of Faith" explores much wider social and political issues that characterize Sri Lanka and other Asian countries. The encouragement of violence by the state, manipulation of the media, class and caste rivalries, are amongst the several subjects vividly illuminated in this sharp satire. At the same time, underneath the racy humour there is a close attention to personal motivations, particularly in terms of the family structures that dominate such societies. The result is a novel that presents a bitterly coherent critique of the aberrations it exposes.
