Action Heroes were a British synth rock band from the towns of Tavistock and Okehampton in Devon, England. In the summer of 1995, the band Harry and the Hormones formed, and later became known as the Action Heroes. They were the biggest band to come out of the Tavistock scene in the mid-nineties, later to set up in London where they released Rebel at the Weekend to great acclaim on the Snakebite City 7 compilation. To lesser acclaim was their second release Pornography again on Snakebite City 9.

Their brand of electro-rock 'n' roll is now considered to be ahead of its time and even more apparent now as the genre New Rave has broken into the UK music scene since the early 2000's with bands such as Klaxons and Shitdisco.

They disbanded in 2002 after losing two of their original members to other countries, three of the original band members went on to be part of the band The Rumble Strips. Ian Ross went on to develop his technical understanding of music and is now playing in the bands Babyhead and the Zen Hussies. Sanjay Mitra later continued his career in music after returning to the UK, and is now part of the folk country outfit Oli n clive.

Original Members of the band in 1995 were:

  • Charlie Waller (Vocals, rhythm guitar)
  • Harry Dwyer (Synthesiser keyboard)
  • Sanjay Mitra (Bass guitar, backing vocals)
  • Sam Mansbridge (Lead guitar, backing vocals)
  • Matthew Wheeler (Drums)

Members of the band in 2000:

  • Charlie Waller (Vocals, rhythm guitar)
  • Harry Dwyer (Synthesiser keyboard)
  • Sanjay Mitra (Bass guitar, backing vocals)
  • Sam Mansbridge (Lead guitar, backing vocals)
  • Matthew Wheeler (Drums)
  • Ian Ross (Trombone)

[edit] Trivia

The bands name was shortened from Harry and the Hormones to The Hormones before being changed to the Action Heroes. The name only came to stick after the alternative suggestions Buff Orpington's Burger Volcano and Super Models, by band members Harry Dwyer and Sanjay Mitra were rejected by their lead singer. This signified a power struggle that was taking hold in the band.

[edit] Media Quotes

"Plugs: Emma wants everyone to know about Action Heroes (www.actionheroes.co.uk) who are playing at The Rock Garden at 9.00pm tonight. They come from Devon (like Mike and Emma) and one of the guys in the band is the son of Graham who used to be one half of a local estate agency called Mansbridge & Balment who are competitors to Ward and Chowen whose offices by the church Mike once shared when he was down there. Emma’s mum used to work in the Spar near Mike’s house, but now works in Pillars the newsagents. Anyway, Emma says the band is good., and she took the photos that appear on the website" - borkowski liquidsoap - Link to Review
