The Act of Contrition is a prayer recited by the penitent during the Latin Rite Roman Catholic sacrament of Confession.

Deus meus, ex toto corde poenitet

me omnium meorum peccatorum,

eaque detestor, quia peccando,

non solum poenas a te iuste

statutas promeritus sum,

sed praesertim quia offendi te,

summum bonum, ac dignum qui

super omnia diligaris.

Ideo firmiter propono,

adiuvante gratia tua,

de cetero me non peccaturum

peccandique occasiones

proximas fugiturum. Amen.

English

O my God, I am heartily sorry

for having offended Thee,

and I detest all my sins,

because I dread the loss of Heaven

and the pains of Hell,

but most of all because they

offend Thee, my God,

Who art all-good and deserving

of all my love.

I firmly resolve, with the help

of Thy grace to confess my sins,

to do penance

and to amend my life. Amen.

An Act of Contrition

The Anglican Tradition (aka Church of England, in the USA, The Episcopal Church) has its own Act of Contrition, usually referred to as Confession of Sin. This is said by the Congregation en masse during regular worship services:

"Most merciful God, "we confess we have sinned against thee "in thought, word, and deed, "by what we have done "and by what we have left undone. "We have not loved thee with our whole heart; "we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. "We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. "For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, "have mercy on us and forgive us; "that we may delight in thy will, "and walk in thy ways, "to the glory of thy Name. Amen."

This ritual has several different forms to suit the needs of its Protestant worshippers, all of which are essentially similar
