The novel is about an Illinois family's, the Creighton's, point of view of the American Civil War. The story centers around the Jethro Creighton, a nine year old farm boy. Two brothers from the family fight for the north, while one brother fights for the south. After their father has a heart attack, Jethro has to be the man of the house.
The book received the prestigious Newbery Honor in 1965.[1]
