[edit] Plot summary

In the opening scene, Eureka and Mischa hurry to head back to the Gekko, but Renton is still holed up in his room. After repeated knocking on his door, Talho kicks the door in and forcibly brings them back to the ship. The crew is exhausted from working overnight to repair the Gekko. Talho meets with Holland at the catapult, where she reminds him that even without Eureka, they can still launch the Nirvash with Renton at the controls.

In her quarters, Eureka tries to put on a good face for her children, but they are frightened away, and ask Renton to bring her some lunch. Eureka stumbles to the hangar, and climbs aboard the Nirvash. Deciding that it would have been better not to have changed since acquiring the Amita Drive, she removes the compac drive from its socket. The Nirvash self-activates, and drives deep into the mine. Renton gives chase on an old mining rail truck.

Meanwhile, a sizeable military detachment, including missile batteries, arrive near FAC-51 and begin bombarding the old mine. Although Holland initially decided to depart the mine immediately, he decides instead to hold until the last moment when he learns that Eureka, not Renton, is aboard the Nirvash.

Deep in the mine, Eureka touches a wall, and in the ensuing reaction, becomes absorbed by it. In the process, her body becomes covered by the Scub. In the following scene, Renton sees the light particles and a vision similar to the Zone, and narrowly prevents derailing the truck. He finds both the Nirvash and Eureka.

In the next scene, Eureka searches a collection of empty bookshelves for her book, before "the bus leaves... and the night melts" her. The sunset in the vision abruptly turns to night, and as she is beginning to fade away, a hand grasps her and, in the scene immediately following, Renton pulls her out of the wall.

As the interior of the mine begins to crack under the intense battering of the missiles, Holland orders the crew to launch the Gekko.

Renton calls out to the Nirvash to give him the power to protect Eureka, and a massive explosion of energy triggers a fountain of trapar deep within the mine. As the Gekko uses this huge wave to fly to safety, the mine's summit is shattered. The nearby military commander hastily orders his men to retreat. When he sees the Nirvash climb from the blasted crater, Holland realizes that the trapar waves were a result of a Seven Swell inside the mine. He warns Renton not to ride the Nirvash again.
