[edit] Accidents
"A Spanish steel plant (Acerinox) in Algeciras, Cadiz adds a capsule filled with cesium 137 to scrap metal before melting it down. The radioactive substance is released into the atmosphere and nuclear authorities in France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland detect 2,400 microbequerel of radiation in the air, 1,000 times higher than usual ground reading." [1]
"Cesium-137 is water-soluble and extremely toxic in minute amounts. Once released into the environment, it remains radioactively lethal for 300 years. It can cause cancer 10, 20 or 30 years from the time of ingestion, inhalation or absorption." [2]
