Abuyahia Yarmorasen

Abuyahia Yaghmorasen (Abu Yahia Ghamarasan) (?-1282). Ziyanid-Moorish ruler. Born in western Algeria he was the chief of the Zenata tribe (which claimed descent from Ali, son in law of Muhammad). He campaigned against the Almohads from 1236-1248 and captured the city of Tlemcen in 1248, founding the Ziyanid dynasty, he captured Fez in 1269 during a series of wars against his neighbours, and was involved in conflict with the rival Marinid dynasty from 1270 until his death. A tribal chieftain whose military skill enabled him to found a dynasty, he was capable and warlike.
