Abram Wood

Captain Abram Epperson Wood was the first acting Military Superintendent of Yosemite National Park.

Wood was a West Point graduate and served in the American Civil War and various Indian wars.

Wood arrived in Yosemite at Wawona commanding companies I & K, 4th Cavalry, on May 19, 1891 and established Camp Wawona. Captain Wood died at the Presidio, San Francisco, California in April, 1894, apparently of cancer of the tongue.

Camp Wawona was renamed Camp A. E. Wood in his honor by Captain G. H. G. Gale who succeeded Wood as Superintendent. Mount Wood (12,657 feet) was named in his honor in 1894 by Lieutenant. N. F. McClure.
