Aboriginal Police in Canada
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aboriginal Police in Canada are police forces responsible for public order on First Nations across Canada.
First Nations police forces were created in order for greater sensitivity to the needs of the people of the First Nations. Past conflicts, some fatal, have created tension between non-aboriginal police forces and aboriginal people. These incidents are mostly likely to occur in urban centres, but the shooting of Dudley George in Ontario supports the need for greater sensitivity. First Nations Chiefs of Police Association (FNCPA) was created in 1992 to co-ordinate ideas from other forces in dealing with aboriginal policing.
