Ablutions (Episcopal)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article refers to the cleaning of the chalice. See disambiguation for other uses.

Ablutions in the most liturgical denominations, such as The Episcopal Church, refers to a ritual cleansing of the chalice and paten used in the Eucharist after all have taken Communion.

This process is traditionally done by a deacon, celebrant, or chalice bearer. Often this includes consuming remaining bread and wine, rinsing the chalice and paten with water, and then using a purificator to dry them.

This can be done at the Altar at a Credence or in the Sacristy. This is usually done before any postcommunion prayers.
