Certain jocks at Baker High School, Washington, have been diagnosed with "Abel Frye Syndrome", which is hallucigenic and causes them to see the "ghost of Abel Frye". The school legend goes that Abel Frye was a geek who used to go to Baker High, and was tormented by the other kids so much that he hanged himself. Rumor had it that he had come from a rich family and also had a pet hawk that he used to sic people.

A family of under-cover investigators, the Veritas Project, came in and discovered that Abel Frye was not real, and that his victims suffered from Spider Bites. The spiders, African Spotted Wolf Spiders, infested the school when a female bred with a Brown Recluse, creating a fast-breeding hybrid.

In the end, Abel Frye turned out to be the name of a boat, that was infested by the same spider hybrid. Norman Bloom, Baker High student and nephew of Abel Frye, turned out to be responsible for the illusion.
