Abe Lincoln in Illinois (play)

Abe Lincoln in Illinois was written by the American playwright Robert E. Sherwood in 1938.

The play, in 2 acts, covers the life of president Abraham Lincoln from his childhood through his final speech in Illinois before he left for Washington. The play also covers his romance with Mary Todd and his debates with Stephen A. Douglas, and uses Lincoln's own words in some scenes.

The play was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for 1937-38. In addition, it was made into a movie in 1940 with Sherwood helping to adapt the script. See Abe Lincoln in Illinois (film). It was also adapted for television in 1964, starring Jason Robards as Abe Lincoln, and telecast as part of the Hallmark Hall of Fame series. In recent years, it was revived on Broadway with Sam Waterston in the title role.
