Lt Gen Abdul Qayyum hails from military district of Chakwal. He was commissioned in Pakistan army artillery in 1968 and is a war veteran. His important assignments during service were instructor at the National Defence College, unit commander in Saudi land force and military secretary with two Prime Ministers, where he observed the functioning of state apparatus from a very quarter and attended all cabinet and international bi-lateral meetings besides visiting all important countries in all the continents of the world. He also commanded an infantry brigade and an artillery division.

Graduating from Pakistan Military Academy in the late Sixties Lt. Gen Abdul Qayyum's military career spanning four decades included active duty during the seventies war and secondment to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for two years. With an MSc in War Studies, Lt. Gen. Abdul Qayyum was also given the military honor of appointment as a faculty member of The National Defence College. In addition, Lt Gen Abdul Qayyum served as the Military secretary to two Prime Ministers, a distinguished post requiring military expertise along with state and diplomatic acumen. Such key positions and experiences made Lt. Gen Abdul Qayyum the candidate to head Pakistan Ordnance Factory (POF) a position made available only to serving generals displaying a high level of business leadership skills.
In recognition of his meritorious services, he was awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military). He also served as chairman of Pakistan Ordinance factories board (POF), Wah Industries (Pvt.) Ltd. and Wah Nobel group of companies. POF under his leadership not only made Pakistan Army self sufficient in Arms and ammunitions but also started exporting arms. The General was appointed as chairman of Pakistan Steel on 19th January, 2004 on his retirement from his service. Pakistan steel, under his dynamic leadership has transformed with a bang. Its turnaround in brief period is unprecedented in the corporate history of the country. It is first time in profit after wiping out all accumulated losses of over Rs 9 billion. His labor friendly policies have brought in desired harmony in Pakistan Steel. The General is admired for his leadership acumen, dynamism and skill to generate a team spirit. ~~
[edit] Experience with Pakistan Ordnance Factories
It was during this appointment when Lt. General Abdul Qayyum established his reputation as a visionary organizational leader. Pakistan Ordnance Factory is a massive industrial undertaking comprising 14 plants responsible for serving all Pakistan's military requirements. Prior to Lt. Gen Abdul Qayyum's appointment this Industrial complex's reputation was limited to within Pakistan's borders and only a few third world countries. Under Lt. Gen Abdul Qayyum's leadership a global marketing strategy was implemented resulting in POF becoming a successful supplier of arms and their spares to Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland and the USA. Such strategic business alliances transformed the profitability and vision of this humble organisation of national recognition to an international player with a reputable brand.

The turnaround of POF under Lt, General Abdul Qayyum's command made him the President's first choice for the leadership of Pakistan Steel. Lt General Abdul Qayyum's joining as Chairman of Pakistan Steel was by all means a smooth transition.
Pakistan Steel at this time was riddled in debt, tainted with charges of corruption and in a state of disrepair due to bad management and lack of capital investment. Within two years the Chairman has managed to clear Pakistan Steel of all debts and signed an agreement with Transparency International to remove any stigma of corruption associated with the Organisation. Furthermore, he has successfully implemented a Quality Management System (QMS) resulting in ISO accreditation in five separate areas making Pakistan Steel a pioneering QMS organisation in Pakistan. Overcoming the challenges imposed by poorly maintained equipment the Chairman successfully initiated a successful maintenance strategy resulting in Pakistan Steel achieving its' highest profitability in 2 consecutive years. Such a dynamic turn around by a single Chairman is unprecedented in the history of Pakistan Steel and is testimony to the abilities of our Current Chairman. These achievements have been critical in Pakistan Steel attracting 19 International bidders for its' privatization. A devout Muslim with high moral values the Chairman has strived to implement these values across the workforce and is extremely effective in the social improvement to employee facilities and family care. A keen golfer, Lt. General Abdul Qayyum ensures that he makes time for regular visits to the local golf course. A health conscious individual, Lt. General Abdul Qayyum actively promotes health related activities across the workforce and can regularly be seen requesting the Quaid-e-Azam park jogging track with members of the workforce who can keep the pace. Lt. Gen Abdul Qayyum also commanded an infantry brigade and an artillery division, and was chairman of Pakistan Ordnance Factories.[1].[2]
