Prince Abdallah is the second son of the late King Khalid of Saudi Arabia, who ruled from 1975 until his death in 1982. His mother was Tarfa, daughter of Abdallah ibn Abd al-Rahman, first cousin to his father, and Nura bint Abdallah, a descendant of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and member of the influential Al ash-Sheikh family of Najd.
Prince Abdallah was born in Riyadh in 1935. He received a traditional and religious education at the hands of leading scholars and ulema. Upon the death of his father, Prince Abdallah announced that he would not contest the succession.
Although now retired from public life, he remains a respected family elder. He is the Chairman of the King Khalid Foundation, a philanthropic trust established by the children of the late king. He is also involved in raising and breeding racehorses.
