A Young Man Is Gone

"A Young Man Is Gone" is a song recorded by the American pop band The Beach Boys and released on their 1963 album Little Deuce Coupe. It is performed a cappella by Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, David Marks and Al Jardine.

Based on the melody of Their Hearts Were Full of Spring, (written by Bobby Troup and earlier recorded by The Four Freshmen), its new lyrics, written by Mike Love to fit the car/racing theme of Little Deuce Coupe, are a eulogy to actor James Dean, who died in a car accident while en route to a car race in which he intended to compete.

The Beach Boys later recorded the original Their Hearts Were Full of Spring in both live and studio versions. The singing style of the Four Freshmen was a major early influence on the band's musical leader Brian Wilson.
