Savage 2, sequel to S2 Games' Savage: The Battle for Newerth, is a fantasy/sci-fi computer game that combines aspects of Real-time strategy, First-person shooter, and RPG gaming into one package. In Savage 2, two teams fight for survival and dominance. It pits Humans against Beasts in a game where players can experience the strategy of an RTS (top down perspective, build, research and command), the action of an FPS (guns, axes and swords), and the feel of an RPG (3rd person perspective, persistent experience points, leveling, NPCs and persistent items).
S2 Games has decided to leave the traditional publisher and distribution model, and will sell the game itself, for $29.99, offering it as a download through its web site. By not having to share profits with retailers, publishers, and distributors, S2 Games is capable of having a much lower retail price. This is one of the many benefits of an independent developer distributing their game digitally.
In January 2006 a Linux version was announced to be available at launch, as it was for the prequel Savage 1. The game itself will be available free for download anywhere, anytime, on any PC with fully enabled LAN and Tutorial experience, but online gaming will require the purchase of an account (one time $29.99 fee). Each account will have persitent statistical tracking of all in game activity like Kills, Deaths, Assists, Building Razes, Damage, Wins / Losses / Disconnects, and much more.
One of the most innovative features of Savage 2 is having an automated replay network that saves every single match of Savage 2. These matches are searchable by players, servers, maps, match ups, etc... You can then learn more details of any given match and download that given replay. Imagine browsing the highest ranked players, reviewing their "Match History" and downloading some of their replays to see how they play the game. This will greatly increase the skill level of the overall player population and increase competitiveness.
