A Thousand Pieces of Gold
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Thousand Pieces of Gold (1991) is a film about the trials of a 19th century Chinese immigrant woman in the American Old West. It stars Rosalind Chao, Chris Cooper, Dennis Dun and Michael Paul Chan, and was directed by Nancy Kelly.
When a Chinese woman named Lalu is transported against her will to the American Old West shortly after the Civil War she faces discrimination and hardship. This film has adventure and romance in an abundance that allows the filmmakers the leeway to explore the meanings of slavery, obligation, and marriage. The performances, by Chao and Cooper make the movie seem both fresh and enduring. While the portrayal of Chinese men is not very flattering, it may represent the cultural norm of the times. Most of the film is in English. Chinese dialogue is supported by white English-language subtitles which appear on the picture.
