Released on July 12, 2005 and distributed only to radio stations, A Missing Chromosome is a compilation of various non-LP tracks and B-sides by The Mars Volta. The title comes from the first line of the chorus in "A Plague Upon Your Hissing," "a missing chromosome walks."

  • Many of the lyrics for "A Plague Upon Your Hissing" would later appear in the song "Day of the Baphomets", on their 2006 LP Amputechture.
  • "Frances The Mute" was originally meant to be the first track on Frances The Mute. However, due to the time constraints of a compact disc and Universal Records' unwillingness to release a double album, the song was cut from the tracklisting.
