A Family at War

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Family At War was a British television drama made by Granada Television for ITV. The director was David Giles.

The series was transmitted between 1970 and 1972 and examined the lives of the working-class Ashton family of the city of Liverpool and their experiences during the Second World War. Although well-made, it was considered to portray unremitting gloom by many.

In its emphasis on the response of civilians to the war, it could be argued that A Family At War was unique among TV representations of the period, and that it provided the template for the later Australian series The Sullivans.

Fifty-two episodes were produced, all but eight of them in colour. Episodes numbers 25 through 32 were filmed in black and white because of a trade union dispute.

The complete set is now available on DVD.

A website called A Family at War (Fan Site) is devoted to this remarkable television series, and it offers a discussion group for fans around the world.
