[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Simon Leamy
This note is to let you know that I have consolidated this AfD into Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/J. P. McManus Scholarship Award winnners 2. There were multiple articles for winners of the J. P. McManus Scholarship Award created today and it makes more sense to have a single discussion for these articles instead of handling them one at a time. --Allen3 talk 12:10, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Hubble Deep Field
You were right to revert your edits, but as you stated you were unsure here's a quick explanation. More distant stars & galaxies are younger due to the time it takes for their light to reach us. Therefore if an object is 12 billion light years away, we are seeing at as it existed 12 billion years ago. If these galaxies still exist, they most certainly will be the amongst the oldest in the universe. But unfortunately we will have to wait billions of years for their light to reach us, to find out whether they still exist today. I hope that makes a bit more sense. Hi there! I noticed your edits to the Enigma disambiguition page just recently and wanted to tell you that Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages) states that wikilinks in dab pages should not be in piped form. [edit] Wonderful User Page
Having just read your gracious comments on my user page - thank you - i've now read your user page. delightful. now *that's* a user page! i was pleased to read your mention regarding use of alternative software for talk/discussion pages, along the lines of PHP bulletin board. i'd had the same thought in the last week or so, and it really makes sense - and is badly needed. discussions aren't articles - using the same software for them is madness, and as noted increases the likelyhood of tomfoolery with other people's comments (i've had discussion comments i've written deleted arbitrarily by a person who feels who 'owns' the page in question and its discussion - if something written is wrong, then it must stand and be pointed out as wrong, not be capriciously removed). but enough rambling. fabulous photos on your page as well. cheers! [edit] Special characters
I'm not sure whether adding these notices at the top and bottom of articles is a good idea. The footer notice is really too big for an article. As many of these articles also contain {{language}}, it might be better to use that templates capability to add a samll footer notice to the bottom of the language infobox instead. --Gareth Hughes 15:26, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] depth of Eurobond markets
Ref your edit comment on Euro: I don't suppose you'd accept "stands to reason, dunnit". Only example I can think of is that the Irish Governmment has been able to secure long term debt denominated in Euro on more favourable terms that previously it did in IEP. Of course a sceptic might observe that "Ireland plc" has improved its credit rating no end at the same time, so what is cause and what is effect? --Red King 00:35, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- History gives "23:50, 27 November 2005 A bit iffy (rv last edit - test?) ". I admit though that I thought you meant that the edit was a bit iffy, and maybe didn't revise that when I found it was your moniker. No worries either way! --Red King 00:46, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Requiring log-in for editing: a good idea
I've finally done something about the anonymous edit situation, rather than just bleating about it in my edit summaries! laying the case before the Village Pump (here). I encourage everyone to support the move on Village Pump; and in the edit summaries of your reverts to link there — although I've been completely unable to figure out how to do it. . . . [edit] Copyright Examination Rejected
You requested a copyright examination regarding Virgil's tomb. Sadly copyright examinations is not the right place for your request. The most common reason is that the content has already been added/uploaded to Wikipedia. Such cases (violations or not) are taken care of at Wikipedia:Copyright problems.
- If, after careful reading of the copyright examinations page, you still think it is the right place for your request, use the copyright examinations talk page to discuss the case.
- If you have problems trying to find the appropriate place for your request, consult the copyright problems talk page.
Your request will eventually be moved to List of requests which don't belong here on the copyright examinations page. Please try to find the right place for your request as soon as possible. We hope that your request will find the right place and get answered. --Easyas12c 01:48, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wikilinking years
Hi. I was just browsing your user page and read, And with years, e.g. 1956, I see very little point in making links of those. I think it's unlikely that users, on reading that someone was born in 1956, would then want to go to the 1956 article.. I certainly understand what you're saying about over-linking making an article unreadable, but I think year links are very valuable. It's a fascinating way to learn about a topic. What was going on in politics, science, music, art, theology, etc at the same such-and-such person was born? How did those events shape that person's life? For example, Isaac Newton states that Newton's work built on that of his predecessor, Galileo, but fails to note that Galileo died the year Newton was born (plus or minus some calendar confusion). Having year links would make it easy to discover this fact. -- RoySmith (talk) 20:15, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] York
Thanks for inserting an extra link on the York page to my (incomplete, but I'm working on it as we speak) Strays of York article. However, are Princess Eugenie/York Student Television the best bedfellows? Places of Interest seems better, and it looks as if that was once divided into City Centre and Further Out (or similar) because of the 2 alpha sequences, except that someone has tacked some more stuff on the end (sigh! I'm all in favour of anarchism, but...). Anyway, I'll sort it out later (if you don't), and maybe I'll write something on the Blue Bell, too, as it's only four minutes walk from here and I have been known to have the occasional pint of Joshua Tetley's finest Mild Ale there. --GuillaumeTell 22:19, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- OK, iffy (May I call you iffy?), thanks for the response, and I'm sure we can make something more sensible out of the existing situation. But not just now, as it's past my bedtime. [edit] Canopy (forest)
Your change to West Nile virus, i.e., directly to forest, causes an incorrect meaning in the article where the habitat of forest versus canopy is significant. I have nominated this redirect for deletion; hopefully someone will write a proper article on the topic. Rmhermen 19:04, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pseudomathematics
You rm Category:Euclidean plane geometry from this article. I certainly won't fight for its inclusion, but there is a reason for it. Plane geometry is a breeding ground for mathematical cranks; false solutions to the three classic (insolvable) problems of compass and straightedge construction are favorite subjects of pseudomathematics.
I agree, though, that the cat is a bit of a stretch. A see also might be the better choice. John Reid 23:20, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dilcoe's edit
Hi A bit iffy... this is the first time I've attempted corresponding with another user, so I'm probably doing a whole bunch of stuff wrong. If there's a way other than going to your profile and editing your discussion page, please let me know.
Removing the video was my mistake. I thought it was a double of the "A380 being assembled in seven minutes" video a few links above. I guess I should try not to edit wikipedia pages when I haven't slept in over 20 hours, eh?:p
[edit] How to do things
Hi - I saw your comment at Wikipedia:General complaints. I agree the help pages are not that well organized, but generally I find it possible (sometimes resorting to google searches of "site:en.wikipedia.org") to find nearly anything. You can also personally ask (on their talk page) the user who welcomed you. You can also personally ask me if you'd like (I respond to a fair number of questions at the Wikipedia:Help desk). Most things are meant to be simple and self-evident, although there are certainly plenty of cases where this isn't true. In any event, I hope you don't leave in frustration. -- Rick Block (talk) 16:14, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Category:Council elections in England - wikify dates
Many articles under Category:Council elections in England and its subcategories have entries for by-elections with dates formatted "dd/mm/yyyy". An example is "Boney Hay By-Election 20/02/1997" on Lewes local elections#By-election_results. Is it feasible to do a bot to wikify these dates? Generally these by-election results seem to have the same standard format. --A bit iffy 12:08, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
- I have tools to deal with most problems concerning dates. Leave a list of articles on my talk page and I'll have a look. Rich Farmbrough 22:50 11 June 2006 (GMT).

[edit] Re: "Excessive linking"
Hi I've been reading your user page and in the "Things about Wikipedia that irritate me" section you mention excessive linking. It occured to me that it would simplify writing and reading articles too if actually all words or expressions that have WP articles were automatically turned into links. I too often find myself wikifying words. What do you think about that?
--Mrco 17:10, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Things I really hate about Wikipedia"
Since you hate excessive links, perhaps you might like a 'Dates' tab to trim them. To get it, copy the entire contents of User:Bobblewik/monobook.js to User:A bit iffy/monobook.js. Then follow the instructions in your monobook to clear the cache (i.e. press Ctrl-Shift-R in Firefox, or Ctrl-F5 in IE) before it will work. Hope that helps. If you get stuck, just let me know. Regards. bobblewik 17:41, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Junk science
Howdy, A bit iffy, In my work, inferences are never a bit iffy but either true or false. It is entirely possible that you, like so many prominent geostatistical scholars, do not know enough about mathematical statistics to pass the litmus test of H G Wells who believed statistical thinking to be as necessary for good citizenship as the ability to read and write. So why not engage in a little statistical thinking rather than delete what you deem a bit iffy. JanWMerks--Iconoclast 22:52, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I'll keep my message that geostatistics is an invalid variant of mathematical statistics as short as possible, and you do what you want to do. Visit [1]and look at some of the posted files. I want to believe that Wikipedians bring sound science and scientific integrity to the world. Kind regards, JWM--Iconoclast 17:59, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Euro
Why did you revert my contribute to Euro? The link is NOT spam: the resource is completely free and it is related to the entry, since it is a set of icons representing euro coins. The site itself is ads-free, no commercial or profit related. There are other links in that entries which are related to external resources, as currency convertors.--Dejudicibus 11:00, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
Ok, doesn't matter. I thought that such icons could be useful to people looking for Euro in Wikipedia, but it is not a drama if that link is non present. It was a contribute. If it is not appropriate, no problem. --Dejudicibus 13:24, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. By the way, the link has been accepted in the Italian version of Wikipedia. Up to you to decide if it could be reverted in the English one and what's the most appropriate way to present it.--Dejudicibus 13:30, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- P.P.S. You said that my site has problems... I am not aware of them. Which are they? I would appreciate if you could tell me what's wrong, so that I can try to correct it. Thank you in advance.--Dejudicibus 13:30, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Your suggestion to add the link to Euro Coins is VERY good and appropriate. I did it. Thank you.--Dejudicibus 14:51, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Terribly Sorry
I had mistook your edit to Limerick to be vandalism. I originally intended to remove the bit about Limerick being nicknamed "Stab City". Whilst I'm aware of the nickname, I believe it to be a bit POV (I'm a Galwegian, myself). My apologies for mitaking your very necessary and contributory spelling edit for vandalism. Thank you for pointing out my mistake and I'll spend more time on each edit to ensure that this doesn't happen again. Cheers! hoopydinkConas tá tú? 08:16, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Sandra Bullock
Hi, do you know what happened in this edit? The edit summary said you were removing a link, but it looks like a lot of information was removed (such as interwiki links). Wmahan. 20:47, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Re message you left for me ([2]) - am mystified. Have no recollection of doing anything major. Have to rush off to work now. Hope I can try to figure out what happened later. --A bit iffy 03:56, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
-
- Having now had another look at this, I am still utterly mystified. I'm quite sure I did NOT make the above edit. However, the edit summary "Cut link to babe100.com - linkspam. Tidied." is in my style. I do remember seeing a link to babe100.com somewhere (not sure whether it was on Bullock's article), but looking back at various previous versions of the article I cannot find a mention of babe100.com. I try to be very transparent and honest about my edit summaries (as quite possibly you've noticed, Wil), and I would not bury major changes under a single word such as "tidied". In fact, I have never made an edit as major as that one, and if I did, I would probably (a) discuss it first, and (b) use caps in the edit summary. So, what now? Is the article now in an acceptable state, or do things still have to be fixed? Also, I would like to get to the bottom of that weird edit in my name - any ideas? --A bit iffy 07:09, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- I noticed that you are an editor with a history of positive contributions, which is why I asked about that edit. My guess is that you somehow reverted to an earlier version when tidying the page.

[edit] My edits on Jaws
Hi. Sorry I did not provide a reason in my edit summary for removing the site; since you could barely edit a comma without receiving an edit conflict message, I just did a couple of quick edits so I wouldn't get reverted or blocked. I removed the Bunnies parody site because, while it certainly is funny, I don't think it belongs in an encyclopedic article. If we added sites with related content like that to the article, the external links section would become bloated. I hope you understand my reasoning.--Dark Kubrick 22:56, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Political parties established in yyyy
Hi! First off, I think it was a good idea to create these subcats. To reply to your points
- (Sadly) I know very little of bots, this could work, but note that most political parties aren't even categorized in established in years-cats.
- There is a clear issue of consistency vs. beauty: do we go for the established route or do we innovate? Me creating Category:Political parties founded in 1968 was a typo as was Category:Parties established in 1922 by the way. These ought to be renamed.
I wouldn't worry too much about the scale since most political party articles are stubs without the year of foundation included. My estimate is that there are around 750 parties currently categorized per year. Even manually that could be do-able, but I hope you can find an automated solution. C mon 12:59, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Armenian Genocide
Thanks for helping me out on Armenian Genocide. I have left a notice on WP:AN/I as well. What do you think should be done about this? AecisBravado 01:54, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- I was worried about 3RR as well. But continuing to reinstate that section (about a dozen times in the last 30 minutes) without using the talk page or any other discussion method counts as disruptive behaviour bordering on vandalism. If you leave a notice at AN/I, it'd probably be best to do it in WP:AN/I#Regarding Armenian Genocide. I don't know if page protection is a good idea: there's only one problem user, and the article was unprotected only three hours ago. AecisBravado 02:04, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Abraham Lincoln and bankruptcy
Re Abraham Lincoln, I can and I will. It was very early on his life. I'll find some links later today, cheers Johnnybriggs 07:49, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Although I can find lots and lots of dodgy American sources about his bankruptcy in 1833 I can only find good links which refer to his severe (early) debts and his possessions being seized by a Sheriff and business that he owned going bankrupt - rather than a formal declaration of his personal insolvency. Anyone know an insolvency practioner who can supply me with a definition? It is part of American folklore that he did go bankrupt as a grocery store owner and then went into law and politics but accurate definition may be difficult.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Johnnybriggs (talk • contribs).

[edit] Ennis
I have put Ennis on my watchlist. I had a look at the edit history and I can see your point. As vandalism goes, it seems a bit more thought out than most, and at a guess, it would be someone from the area. That said, as vandalism goes, it tends more towards the teenager having a laugh end than the malicious end of the vandalism spectrum, so chances are it will peter out. Most of it is getting reverted within a few minutes, but I'll keep an eye on it. Flowerpotman 23:57, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Expansion of WP:BAH - your opinion, please.
I have had the idea of expanding and renaming WikiProject Brighton to become WikiProject Sussex - this would not exclude people with a particular interest in, say, Chichester, Arundel, Worthing, Midhurst, Pulborough, Billingshurst, Horsham, Crawley, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye, Winchelsea, etc. - all places worthy of a WikiProject - and I'm not sure that having WP:BAH as a sub-project of WP:Sussex would work. I feel that we are being too exclusive - we could attract new members this way. What do you think? - Vox Humana 8' 17:32, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
